IIT JEE is a very popular exam among students who want to pursue higher studies in technical and engineering field in India. The JEE exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) annually on a national level. The exam has gained such popularity because it is the gateway to some of the best and renowned IITs or NITs in the country. Candidates can secure seats and get admission in these institutions by clearing the JEE exam which is divided into JEE Main and JEE Advanced.
However, it is not always easy for candidates to crack the exams. JEE is regarded as one of the world’s most tough and challenging exams. This is mainly because of the vast syllabus, the question pattern of the exam and the competition is intense. Alternatively, candidates also find it difficult because they follow ineffective study methods or techniques and make silly mistakes during their preparation period. Besides, these mistakes can be the main reason behind candidates not getting a seat in some top or their desired institute. This is a huge price to pay.
In any case, it is very important for candidates to overcome their shortcomings and give their best performance. To do that, candidates should avoid some common mistakes mentioned below.
- Rote Learning
When candidates find it difficult to understand a topic, the only alternative they have is to mug up concepts. This is a wrong practice and candidates should avoid engaging in rote learning mainly because;
- Candidates might fail to remember the concept when it is required.
- JEE Main 2019 and Advanced exams are clearly designed to test the candidates’ deep understanding of the concepts as well as their comprehension and reasoning skills.
Mugging up concepts is, therefore, a waste of time. Instead, candidates should gain a clear understanding of both the basic as well as advanced concepts.
- Thinking Syllabus Is Not Important
When candidates are preparing for JEE, one common mistake that they usually make is they ignore the syllabus. Students should realize that syllabus is an important document and that, they should go through it completely. Why? Getting an overview of the syllabus will help candidates gain a lot of valuable insights into the course structure and its aim, important topics, the objective of question setters, exam details, assignments and a lot of other important information. Students should be familiar with the syllabus as it will help them have a slight edge over other competitors.
- Not Sticking To Their Timetable
The first step in successful JEE preparation is creating a suitable timetable and following it without any disruptions. Nonetheless, many candidates tend to create a rigid study plan and later they completely ignore the timetable leading to mental exhaustion. Thus candidates should first create a proper timetable which they can follow easily. It has to be stated that candidates will be able to cover the syllabus and have enough time for revisions only if they adhere to their schedule.
- Burning The Midnight Oil
It is a common practice among most of the JEE aspirants to study for long hours and they even tend to stay up late at night. But, this is not advisable. It is not a healthy habit and in the long run, can result in increasing dullness of the mind. Enough rest and sleep is a must. With a refreshed mind, candidates can study early in the morning where they will be able to grasp concepts more quickly and understand them clearly. In addition, candidates should remove any stress and take recreational breaks in between. All these will help them boost their productivity and they will be able to deliver better performance in the upcoming JEE Advanced exam.
Candidates should realize that each person is different when it comes to studying. Each candidate will have their own mental capabilities and set of study skills. Do not compare or copy others including their preparation methods or study routine. A word of advice – have faith in your own abilities and strengths to crack the exam. Focus on improving the weak areas and be confident.
Now that these common mistakes are highlighted here, candidates should avoid them in order to excel in the IIT JEE exams.
